As we watched the recording of our 11 month old daughter taking her first steps I noticed my wife had tears trickling down from her eyes.
I asked: Why are you crying?
She said: I’m feeling a little sad because I’m thinking about how she is a few steps closer to walking away from me.
I said: Babe, This is supposed to be a happy occasion.
What do you mean she’s going to be walking away from you?
She’s barely one.
She said: Well it won’t be long until she takes her first steps into school from kindergarten to middle school then high school. She will then take her first steps into college and possibly away from home; away from me.
After college she will then take her first steps on her journey’s path, a path that might continue to lead her away from home away from me.
I said: Woman you got all of that from watching a five at the most a ten second video?
Pause….
She said: Are those tears, why are you crying?
I said: I just thought about her taking her first steps down the aisle and me placing her hand into the hand of another man; entrusting him to do what I have and will do as her father since the day she came to be.
Love, cherish and protect her.
They looked at each other hugged and wiped away one anothers tears.Laughing they said: “Lets go wake her up”.
This story was inspired by a video I saw posted by a friend on social media of her daughter taking her first steps (or in her case climb up some stairs).
